Exodus

I admit
My pen has not been busy
It’s been silent
Observant
Watchful
Full of things to speak but I pause and clinch this staff tightly
Selah on the moments recorded in time
Wallow in despair and frustration of what I see
Contempt and hopelessness hold hands counting the minutes until they invade my space
I part my lips
Hoping for an exodus of sound
A murmur
Even a sigh
At the end of this dry tongue is promise
freedom
So instead of speech there are signs
Pointing to destinations
Visions that need eyes to see not the trick but the treasure
Dreams that need interpretations
Ears willing to hear and do
All before idleness crashes against me

Dry tongue
Thirsting for Wet ink to build its walls against the path
White sea clear and full of opportunity
Yet I selah
I pause
I take in the power of silence
The strength and sharpness of this pen
The depth of its permanence
It stains my lips
Again I part them
Take a deep breath
I cross the bottom of this dry ocean of words
I reach the other side
No more wilderness pages
This is my exodus of sound

Minding My Soul Moments…

Good Morning, rise, and grind. Rest and breathe. Whatever your heart needs today, that is what you do. I want to take a moment to encourage you to mind your soul. It’s your business what you do, but there are moments where your soul needs you. So I leave you with a little encouragement. I hope that you can take solace in this small moment.

“Every wound or broken piece of your life is an occasion to experience the Most High Yah in a way you could not experience Him if all was well.” – Tehilayah

There are a thousand things taking place around us at all times, things are seen, some unseen. In every situation we encounter in this life there is a lesson.

Healing does not come without first having a wound. Healing is a process that we try to often rush. The well doesn’t need to be healed. The sick, however long the process, need help. Sometimes, we walk around not knowing that we are sick. The diagnoses are handed to us and we realize that we have been walking around sick for awhile. It’s crushing. The first question is, how? We check off these little imaginary boxes. These boxes say, “but I…”. We then began to recognize it in our interactions and our quiet moments alone. We see hindsight that we have mismanaged our souls.

A wound is often a sign that we need to slow down. Example time. My daughter asked for a skateboard. She always does all the research before she brings anything to my husband and me. She had no problem making her case and of course, we got her a skateboard. She watched countless videos on how to ride. The day comes, “Mom, can I ride my skateboard?”, she says. My response, “have fun, be careful.” Well, a few moments later she comes back tears in her eyes. “What happened”, I ask. “I was going to fast and got too close to the rocks, I hurt my leg”.

I realized something as I was being a nurse mom. For her to begin the healing process she had to be still. She had to allow me to care for her. I had to clean and dress the wound and she had to be still and experience the love and care she needed. LESSON!!!

The first part of healing is being still. It’s in those still moments where the Most High is caring and nurturing you.

Be still, and know that I am Yah; I am exalted among nations, I am exalted in the earth! (Psalms) 46:10

I hope this has been an encouraging and uplifting moment for you to mind your soul.

My 100th Blog post!!!!

My 100th Blog Post!!!!!!

Milestone are always great to celebrate. I want to take the time to thank all my subscribers that support this blog. I can’t believe that I am now on my 100th Blog post. (insert smiley face here).

Its been almost 2 whole years since I started this blog. It has not always been easy to post content but I stuck in there. Trying to find new ways to stay relevant and innovative is not always easy. Sometimes you don’t have vision and sometimes your vision is too big.

This year I implemented a new feature on my blog called Feature Friday. So far we have had three Friday Features since the launch and the poets are amazing. If you are interested in Feature Friday, don’t be a stranger. Check out the Feature Friday page for instructions here .

Things I have learned in 100 blogs:

  1. You Don’t Have To Blog Everyday. Just make sure that you set a goal for maybe once a week. don’t push yourself. In pushing yourself you can become discouraged and give up. Set a small goal and stick to that until you are ready to push harder. Commit to your success.
  2. Dont Limit Yourself. Just because you built your blog and advertise it as a poetry blog or a cooking blog and even a self help blog doesn’t mean you can’t talk about other things. You don’t have to be one dimensional. You can speak on other interest. Just stay true to who you are and don’t forget why you started the blog in the first place.
  3. Blogs Don’t Have To Be Long. You do not have to write a thesis on your blog. It has no word limitations. You won’t get shamed if your post are just a quote of the day. Sometimes that all you have and its also all that someone needs at the moment.
  4. Dont Overthink It. Be you! This is not the end for you. Blogging or not blogging will not make or break you. Do it because you love it. Do it because you have a voice and something to say. And in the event you have nothing to say, don’t blog. Don’t force yourself to meet unrealistic expectations.

I learned this and more but this is all I can think of at this time. I hope that this helps you. In the meantime celebrate with your girl!!!! I did it, I did it!!! 100 blogs and counting. Brainstorming on new ways to make blogs 101 to infinity, magnificent.

And remember Leave No Line Left Behind….

A letter, a prayer, a desperate cry!

Abba,

I try my hardest to understand the meaning for my trials. I search for reasons as to why my affliction is heavy and long. I search and tarry in my mind to no avail. For the understanding is unreachable. It is distant and yet near to me. Just out of reach and still I can smell the dew of freedom lingering in my steady and slow breaths. I find ways to be still when I rather run. Its easier laying at your feet broken and a mess. It pleases you to crush me. Pleases you to break me. Pleases you to cut and not sever me completely. I just ask that in the midst of my affliction that you show me the beauty of your blows. And you take away the ashes and cover me in your love.

This is a letter, a prayer, a desperate cry. Love from your Daughter… Tehilayah

This is for the broken hearted. The afflicted soul. The person battling a disease that won’t quit. Know that you are not alone. I know it’s not easy. You’ve heard often, “its going to all work out, you’ll be okay”. Truth is, when your in the midst of it, it seems like it will never get better and your not okay. So, I wont tell you that it will work out or you’ll be okay, I will tell you to be patient and look at the positive. Count all your joys and lean on them. In remembrance of the joys you find solace and renewal. I hope for you strength and peace.

Shabbat Shalom!!

And He said to me, “My favour is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, then, I shall rather boast in my weaknesses, so that the power of Messiah rests on me. Therefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in insults, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for the sake of Messiah. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

PSqP- Opening Event and Experience.

Good Morning and Good Evening to some. So, how’s it going? I hope all is well.

So, I’m super excited as PSqP Xtended just popped off amazingly well. It’s the first local event for year that I was in attendance for. This year PSqP is extending the poetry beyond 5th Sundays and stepping out with a themed series. This years theme is Justice and Liberation. The first half of the year is Justice and the second half of the year is Liberation. Poets for the year have already been assigned to their theme. Since me and fellow poet and author Curtis Crisler were up first we had Justice as our theme.

First let me start by saying that this was not an easy task for me, given a theme and prompt. Justice…what is justice to me? I battled writing as I started from a place of research. And if any one knows me they know that I can’t write if there is not a vibe, an energy that allows my pen to speak. So, I struggled a little. Most of my poems were written a couple of weeks in advance of the event.

But there was a surprise….

It was announced that we would have musicians apart of the event. They would be playing live music as we performed! This had me super excited. The musicians were amazing. One was a 16 year old kid who was a saxophonist. At 16 he is a beast!!! Then we had a local bass player that was also amazing. He was not only talented on the bass but he was also fluent in other instruments.

Y’all…. It was amazing!

I wrote 5 poems on justice. My set was only 30 minutes, so 5 was enough. When I arrived at the event, early of course, the space was awesome. It was a recording studio. It was open and there were areas for lounging and eating. This space was so chill. The lights were dim and incense were burning. I was chill and excited.

AND THEN IT HAPPENED…

I was up. For the first time ever, I wasn’t nervous. I noticed this time, that because of the music, it helped to bring out my passion as I was reciting my work. There was no red dot to make me forget my lines. I have fallen in love with music being apart of my poetry. I have so many ideas and projects that I would like to do.

There was another surprise. The entire set was recorded. It will soon be available for listening ears. So far 2020 has started off with a bang . I cant wait for the other poets and their spotlights for PSqP Xtended. This series is going to be awesome!

Newness

Every morning you paint the sky a new masterpiece. At dawn your mercy new. At dusk your favor poured out.

Everyday you water the ground and nurture the earth a new harvest. A new first, a new beginning.

Will you paint me a masterpiece? Awaken a new dawn in me for mercy to dwell in? Pour out your favor on my setting?

Water me, nurture me and I will be a new harvest, a first and a beginning.

Mistakes Happen…

You can be as prepared as you can be and mistakes can still happen.

So you practiced, researched, studied. You had everything prepared but something went wrong. Yep, that was me.

I had the awesome opportunity to be in a video with other talented poets focusing on Black History Month. I was prepared. I memorized my poems. I practice every line. I made tweeks to how I would say specific stanzas. I even practiced in the mirror. I walked around my bedroom pacing and practicing until it was perfect.

The Big Day Comes..

I wake up. Eyes still closed. Feeling the sun peaking through the curtains. I say a silent prayer, thankful for the day. Stretched and got out the bed refreshed. It was early so I had time to enjoy a quiet morning. Did my normal morning routine. Practiced some more!!! Recited and paced yet again. I was ready! I even prepared a back up and had my notebook in my purse, just in case.

The time is here. I arrive and I’m early. Like I said, I’m prepared. I meet the other poets, who weren’t strangers, and I’m comfortable. I sit on the side lines and they all did amazing, as always. We chatted it up and I recited more in my head.

Now it’s my turn. I’m ready!! Confident and excited. I get a mic on. I’m standing on the mark surrounded by bright lights. The countdown starts and the red light turns on….Action!!

I FREEZE!!! YES, I FROZE!! FORGOT EVERY LINE. EVERY DOG ON LINE!

I was prepared and sure. But that red light.. That darn red light was intimidating. The second it came on I just couldn’t get my words out. I fumbled and fumbled over my words. I had to just give up with reciting it from memory and read it from my back up. Boy was I disappointed in myself.

MISTAKES CAN HAPPEN NO MATTER HOW PREPARED YOU ARE.

This is what I learned…

There is the phrase, “Proper planning prevents poor performance”. The 5 P’s of success. I believe Stephen Keague said that. Had I properly planned? Now that was the question.

I believe I did. But nothing, I tell you nothing prepares you for the nerves that show up. It was something about looking into a camera that just got me all messed up. I had done this poem 100 times in front of people. I had recited and memorized it to where I could see the words on paper with my eyes closed. But this… It was different. I was so hard on myself. It haunted me. But hey, it’s said that we are our own worst critics.

Sometimes no matter how much you prepare, there may be certain elements that you don’t figure into your planning. Maybe I should have practiced recording myself. Maybe I did properly plan. Was my performance poor?

No, it wasn’t. I did what I came to do. It wasn’t the way I planned. But all went according to plan. Sometimes the nerves win. Sometimes you can plan and plan and plan some more but things change. You have to be willing and ready to adapt. I properly planned to forget all lines. I had my back up journal in my purse! So I planned to adapt. I planned for the just in case. In the end, when I sit back and think about it I didn’t bomb it. I didn’t fail. I completed my task even if it meant I couldn’t do it the way I envisioned.

I properly planned to have a successful performance.

Superhero

Hello Lovelies,

So I have another poem to share today. I want to preface this poem with a little background. Me and my hubby have been watching this show called, “A Million Little Things”. The show sheds light on depression and how easy it is for people to cover up the fact that they may need someone to talk to. This show has opened up lots of dialogue on the topic of depression in my household. Depression is a real thing that effects real people. If you are a person that deals with depression, there are people and programs that are there to help you. Never feel like you are alone. I know that is easier said then done but we do want to help.

Family and friends, you may not see the signs at all. This show has prompted me to be more aware, to be more kind and open to others feelings. I hope that this poem sheds light on depression for some. Also check out the tv show. It’s on Hulu. It’s a Great Show!

I fell apart again today
Sadness peeked through these soiled bandages
I wrapped my self in
Thought they would hide my scars give me time to heal
Transform me into superhero
But they soiled and I became visible
I can’t Clark Kent this pain
So these tights stitched with encouragement often fade
and a cape filled with smiles finds itself dragged thru dirt
But Im a super hero
Bravery
Just a tool I pull from my treasure chest of disguises
I put it back when I walk past my own reflection
I see my self as a victim and villain
How do I battle me
and save the world
Maybe I need a super hero

Oh wait one more thing…..

Remember leave no line left behind!

The Discipline to Love Self

Self love is on a rise. This is a great thing. People are looking to heal instead of hurt. We live in a society where our mental and emotional beings take a back seat to every distraction that takes away our peace. But today we are healing! Today we facing our traumas without fear. We are taking back our peace, hope, laughter and love. We are becoming more available to ourselves. We are learning to love ourselves again.

It’s important to remember in loving ourselves that we don’t become so self absorbed that we miss our own healing. We could walk right passed the trauma and into the arms of a whole new chapter, one in which we become the traumatiser. It’s extremely important that we don’t become so emotionally attached to ourselves that we disconnect and empathy for others takes a back seat to our facade of healing. Yes, I called it a facade. If you do that or find yourself in this place then your healing isn’t real. Healing is a place where understanding and wisdom meet. It’s where you are comfortable in your own skin and your reactions and inactions are under control. In this space there are certain things that dont move you any more.

The slick comment about your “little” accomplishment…unmoved.

The small chuckles when you walk in a room…unmoved.

The ignored communication…unmoved.

Blatant disrespect…ummoved

Others people’s controlling behaviors…unmoved.

You realize that peace is what you desire above all things. Peace is not all still waters and cool breezes. It’s about being surrounded by the chaos and keeping your calm.

It takes a certain strength in the discipline to self love. A strength that come from humbleness and complete awareness of your behaviours. So when we begin to face our traumas and battle against our fears it is imperative that we take caution and pace ourselves on our path to healing. Let us all be conscience of our growth and disciplined in our peace.

The discipline to love self is a lifelong path. It doesnt end after you’ve faced your fears but it has only just begun. Safe travels to you on your healing journey.

Stay tuned for more and remember to leave no line left behind.

Soul Delicacies

Hello lovely people. It’s been a while. Life had been extremely busy. My pen has been a little dry. It seems like it has taken another direction. Not sure I can take on this task but nothing fails but a try.

Check out my new poem below. When fewer the words, sometimes they have more of an impact.

Soul Delicacies

I tasted a soul once

Let the flavor linger on my tongue

Enjoyed the sweet and the bitter

Swallowed with regret

and craved more

But he was all gone
