Exodus

I admit
My pen has not been busy
It’s been silent
Observant
Watchful
Full of things to speak but I pause and clinch this staff tightly
Selah on the moments recorded in time
Wallow in despair and frustration of what I see
Contempt and hopelessness hold hands counting the minutes until they invade my space
I part my lips
Hoping for an exodus of sound
A murmur
Even a sigh
At the end of this dry tongue is promise
freedom
So instead of speech there are signs
Pointing to destinations
Visions that need eyes to see not the trick but the treasure
Dreams that need interpretations
Ears willing to hear and do
All before idleness crashes against me

Dry tongue
Thirsting for Wet ink to build its walls against the path
White sea clear and full of opportunity
Yet I selah
I pause
I take in the power of silence
The strength and sharpness of this pen
The depth of its permanence
It stains my lips
Again I part them
Take a deep breath
I cross the bottom of this dry ocean of words
I reach the other side
No more wilderness pages
This is my exodus of sound

Do Not Write a Poem

Check this out all this awesomeness. I needed this reminder. How about you?

Do not set out to write a poem. Strip yourself of all the education you think will make you a good writer, and undress all the fluff you believe constitutes a good poem. Write only what is in your heart at this exact moment—every thread of thought and every emotion you have not the courage […]

Do Not Write a Poem

Feature Friday: Buddah Desmond, Home (Don’t Give Up)…

Hey there lovely people! I hope you all are still being safe with everything that is taking place across the world. I am sure that some are on quarantine due the coronavirus sooo, I have some entertainment for you. That’s right it is Feature Friday here on No Line Left Behind. So without further ado let me introduce you to our next feature with Buddah Desmond and his poem, “Home (Don’t Give Up). However, you know how we do it here on No Line left behind. Let’s get to know him a little.

Welcome to No Line Left Behind.

So what is your name and where are you from?

My name is BuddahDesmond. I was born in Washington, DC, and raised P.G. County MD (primarily Forestville, MD and Greenbelt, MD). I currently reside in Alexandria, VA.

Okay, VA in the house! What do you believe the poets purpose is?

The poet’s purpose is to tell the truth. To be the voice of the unheard. To write about things seen and unseen. To write about the good, the bad, and all the notes that lie between. To write about the familiar, and that which makes us uncomfortable. To write that which is in your heart, mind, and soul. To evoke feelings, incite discussion, open minds, and offer different perspectives. If the poet’s work truly resonates with audience, it may inspire positive action or spark social change.

Hmm, yes to all that! So tell us, how long have you been writing and do you partake in any other creative writing?

I’ve been writing since I was about 7 or 8 years old. I started writing short stories, and eventually moved on to song lyrics. I wrote my first poem when I was 10, but didn’t write another poem until I was 12. I continued writing song lyrics between that time, and read a great deal of poetry by Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes, Nikki Giovanni, Sonia Sanchez, and Paul Laurence Dunbar during this time. (All of the aforementioned writers are major influences.) Aside from short stories, song lyrics, and poetry, I also write prose, essays, and blog posts.

Oh, those are some of my favorites as well. What would you like people to know about poetry?

Poetry is about getting beyond the surface. Lifting the veil if you will. As poets, we write about the human condition. The ties that band. The things that bring us together, without shying away from the very things often used to drive wedges between us. We bring our unique styles, sensibilities, and experiences to the forefront, and it colors our work. We live and breathe poetry. It’s a powerful art form, and its language is universal. There is no life without poetry.

It takes bravery to be a poet. So I agree. Do you have a favorite poet and why do you choose them?

I have so many favorite poets. It’s hard to choose just one. But I’ll be good and mention only one of my faves today. LOL! If I were to choose one poet, I’d have to say Maya Angelou. One of my all-time favorite movies is Poetic Justice. I’m a big fan of Janet Jackson, Tupac Shakur (RIP), Regina King, Joe Torry, and John Singleton (RIP), of course. My mother and I went to see Poetic Justice opening weekend, I believe. The griping storytelling and the performances drew me in. I’ve watched it countless times. While Angelou’s poetry in the film moved me, it wasn’t until a year later that it truly began speaking to me in ways that nearly defied comprehension. Around this time I purchased a paperback of Maya Angelou’s Poems. I carried it with me and read selections from it practically everyday for a year or so. It was like my poetry bible.

Angelou has a way with words. She commands them. Her work is sincere, passionate, and engaging. It expresses a consciousness that, no what year it is, remains relevant on social, political, cultural, and historical levels. She is a poet’s poet. When you read Angelou, you’re deeply moved and come away with a better understanding of yourself, the human race, and the world.

Yes, she is one of the greats. Her poetry has always resonated with me. Poetic Justice is one of my favorite movies of all time. So, do you have any upcoming events?

I don’t have any upcoming events yet. However, I am in the process of publishing my next project entitled, From The Inside Out. In addition, I have another poetry manuscript in the works tentatively titled, Everything I Miss(ed) At Home. So stay tuned!

Oh wow, that is so awesome. Im looking forward to supporting you. I hope that the both projects are a success.

And there you have it folks. Now we introduce to you, Home (Don’t Give Up

Home (Don’t Give Up)
by BuddahDesmond

Home is more than the place

where you grew up

More than the place where your family resides

It’s a place that nourishes you

Loves you

Teaches you at the turn of every moment

of the day

Home is solid

It gives you what your soul needs, what your

spirit is calling out for—at just the right time

Home is a provider

Of tangible and intangible things

While you can make any place home

Every place you inhabit won’t feel or be home

You may go through lifetimes of soul-searching

before you find a place that

welcomes you unconditionally

The place that always has its arms open,

ready and waiting for you

Home shouldn’t shame you

Debase you

Shade you

Shouldn’t question your reason for living

Home shouldn’t abuse or neglect you

Home plants gardens of possibilities

within you

Home offers the foundation from that

which you grow

Even when you think there isn’t anything else

left for home to teach you—

it does the impossible

Home is a bearer of gifts

We may not always be willing to except them

We may not know what to do with them

Trust there will be a time when these gifts will

bless you (usually when you least expect it)

Sometimes you have to recreate home

Have to build a new home

Or seek home elsewhere

Especially when the place you’ve called home

has betrayed or ostracized you

It may take some time, but you’ll

find your place

Or it may find you

And when you find it—everything will

make sense again

Everything will feel right in the world again

You’ll feel connected again

Home—there’s no place like it

Home—if you’re lost, you’ll find it

Home—if you’ve been put down, it’ll

build you up

Home—will affirm that you are enough

Home won’t give up on you

So don’t give up on you

Don’t give up!

There you have it people! Round of applause. For all things Buddah Desmond check him out at the links below! Remember, let’s support our poets near and far.

Have a blessed and awesome day!

Feature Friday Presents: Nicolas Correa, “Break up with you (Secondhand Serenade -Fall for you)”

That’s right lovelies its FEATURE FRIDAY!! Here at No Line Left Behind we support poets near and far. So help me welcome our next feature this week, Nicolas Correa with his poem, “Break up with you (Secondhand Serenade – Fall For you)”. Before we jump right into his poem. Y’all know we have to ask some questions to get to know him.

So, what is your name and where are you from?

My name is Nicolas Correa. My poetry name is “The Withdrawn.” I was born and raised in Manhattan, New York. Shout outs to the Lower East Side! I currently am living in Buffalo, NY right now.

Okay, New York in the house!!! What do you believe the poets purpose is?

I believe the poets purpose is to communicate through self-expression what the heart and soul senses through words. In writing it all comes from these two places. The poets purpose is to aid in what we as human beings were put on this Earth to do: spread love, kindness, to help each other, connect, learn. Every day we learn how to do these things–how to communicate and understand each other and the world around us. We never reach a day where we are like, “Aha! I’ve mastered the art of spreading love!” Not at all. The process of connecting and learning doesn’t ever just stop.

Oh yes, I completely agree. How long have you been writing and do you partake in any other creative writing?

I have been writing for about 16 years, but have been writing poetry for about 13. My writing started as small raps, stories, and comic books. I actually still have my journal from 4th grade in really great condition which is awesome. I love to journal, sing, rap, write my own songs. I’m always looking for new and creative ways to expand my writing.

Super dope, what would you like people to know about poetry?

It’s pure, it’s from inside, it’s safe, it’s up, it’s down, it’s left, it’s right, and in my case, it’s me. When people tell me they write but aren’t very good, I always tell them that there is no bad writing. It’s YOUR truth, and that’s what matters. People will never be able to understand your writing the way you do, the way your heart does. I speak my truth and speak the truth for others as well. At first it was hard for me write without inspiration, but I’ve grown to a point where I am inspired every single day. Now it’s easy for me to write on the spot. This year might be my most creative year yet, and the year just started. I’ve realized it’s also ok to speak on experiences that you have not personally dealt with, so as long as you don’t claim that that is your reality. Be truthful and be genuine. You can write from whatever perspective you want whether it be a mother from Florida, a crab on the beach in Hawaii, a piece of cheese LOL. Art is all about creativity.

Creativity is key. I am happy 2020 has been productive for you, yassss! Do you have a favorite poet and why do you choose them?

Man. My favorite poet would have to be Kendrick Lamar. I’ve known about this dude long before he blew up. I can’t just ever see him as a rapper. He’s bigger than that. If you look at his choice of words, the way he flows over these instrumentals, his eyes, his passion expressed through his facial expression and body, it’s just like, wow. It’s crazy when you think about a project and how much younger you were than the artist when listening to it, and then listen to the project again when you’re at the age the artist was when he/she created it. You understand it differently; It resonates differently. Dot is on a whole other level. What a blessing it is for God to have given us such a talented soul.

Kendrick Lamar is a dope artist. Do you have any upcoming events?

I do! I actually perform at some local open mic places in the Buffalo area. You can find the dates posted on the 1st of every month on all my social media accounts. I am looking to eventually try some open mics out in Canada since they aren’t very far. Shout outs to the supporters in Canada!

Okay, Buffalo and Canada show him some love! Check out his social media accounts below.

Now lets get to the this awesome poets work. Show some love and support for, “Break up with you (Secondhand Serenade – Fall For You)”, by Nicolas Correa.

Break up with you (Secondhand Serenade – Fall For You)

John Vesely said,

”The best thing about tonight is that we’re not fighting,”

and I wish we could relate,

cause it feels like almost every single day you come to me with a reason as to why I am deserving of this mental beating.

And I start to believe it—that I deserve this,

that I am the piece of shit you make me out to be or,

that the reason you’re like this, we’re like this,

is because of me.

You suspect me of things but wait you’re the one who would cheat,

I mean fuck,

you have all my social media passwords, and want updates on my schedule in and out of work, the hell you even have a copy of my keys.

You want a list of all my friends but I don’t have any cause you talked me into putting those relationships to an end,

and now I have no one cause they all think I chose you over them…

…you over them.

Said we didn’t need anyone else cause it was always us till the end.

Last night mom asked me about the bruise on my arm again,

”You know, just playing with the guys,” I said.

Last night God asked me about the condition of my heart again,

”It’s doing just fine,” I said.

I can’t cry in front of you or in front of anybody else, not even myself, cause you taught me it isn’t ok to be pussy.

You made me read a book on how to be a better man in this world cause you thought it would be a good read.

You broke it down to my exhausting brain that love is the only thing we would ever need to survive,

but why the fuck am I so tired?

I don’t even pray like I used to anymore, I don’t really care if I die.

Does anyone else know what it’s like to have someone control the food you consume cause they think you’ve gained too much weight since they’ve gotten with you?

Or when and how long you should sleep like hello, does anybody else hear me?!

Or does no one hear me because I’m only crying inside?

I guess the smile on my face isn’t an obvious disguise.

I’m not sure I fully understand or know exactly what love is but,

this that you taught me,

this is not it.

So tonight will be the night that I break up with you.

Pushing, toxicity aside.

I won’t stay with you another day, I swear I’m through,

cause a girl like you should not be in my life.

Tonight will be the night that I break up with you.

Pushing, toxicity aside.

I won’t stay with you another day, I swear I’m through,

cause a girl like you should not be in my life,

should not be in my life.

Have a blessed and awesome day!

And remember Leave No Line Left Behind….

Feature Friday presents – Zerahyah, “Unattainable”…

Hello lovelies, that’s right you know what today is!

IT’S FEATURE FRIDAY!!

Help me welcome Zerahyah to No Line Left Behind with her poem, “Unattainable”. First, as always we got questions.

So, what’s your name and where are you from?

ZerahYah Ysrayl and I’m from New York

Thats a beautiful name. What do you believe the poets purpose is?

A poets job is too bring ones imagination to life. A form of expression through the form of words, to make emotions, life’s ups and downs visual. While giving them a melodic tune. A form of sharing.

I agree, how long have you been writing?

I have been writing off and on for over twenty years..I sometimes write to bring relief to my thoughts..writing poetry brings a form of clarity for me..

What would you like people to know about poetry?

It’s a form of expression in relation to all that goes on within and around a person.its a gift of ones thoughts and experiences, giving to all who reads it. It’s art.

Who’s your favorite poet and why?

My favorite poet is Maya Angelou she formed poetry in a time where we as a people struggle the most. She gave our thoughts a voice when we was afraid to speak. She was bold. Her words where beautiful and her words will resonate forever. She is apart of our history in a proud way.

Well Zerahyah, thank you for being this weeks feature. Welcome to No Line Left Behind. With out further ado I present to you the poet Zerahyah with her poem “Unattainable”.

Unattainable

Maybe I watch too many movies..

Cause I’m waiting for him to sweep me off my feet..

I’m waiting for him to move too the rhythm of my heart beat..

A hopeless romantic could it be all in my mind..

Maybe I’m just suspending in my fantasies..

Unrealistic sceneries that lead to expectation reality..

The unattainable love caught up in the rapture of a hope I can’t capture..

praying for a happy ever after..

why does this love evade me while thoughts of him invade my very existence…

constantly thinking of ways to break his resistance..

his melodic tone I hang on to every word..

I’m a little girl with a school girl crush speaking to my soul yelling don’t rush..

I want him like I want air to breath..

I wonder if he knows he’s a thief cause he stole my heart from the very start..

I refuse to believe this is an illusion wrapped in my own delusions…

Introducing The Most High’s Movement by Taniel, right here on No Line Left Behind

The Most High’s Movement

His voice is thunderous

traveling like lightning through valleys

The vast oceans represent His presence

The sky and the wind, His breath

His words are simple

Full of encouragement

The Master Author of all things

The truth and the lies

Darkness and Light

He painted the sky with the sun

To nourish and grow life

The moon is on His right side

He guides her to shimmer in the dark

His stars have different assignments

To glow and shine

Each expanding at a set apart time

His masterpieces and majesty are everywhere

The letter Y is his favorite pattern

The shape of a whale’s tail, a sign

His glory is embedded in the veins of leaves

And when a person raises their hands to praise him

He uses natural disasters to shake

man-made creations to remind them

who is in control

tornadoes, tsunamis, and earthquakes

are just a few of His moves

We call weather

To establish natural order

He brings people together

to expose bloodlines

And then separates

To show that harmony happens when people follow His ways

He is a rock, a foundation and the highest ceiling.

He is the Most High YAH.

Remember Leave No Line Left Behind.

And We Rise

Black earth rising from ashes of division
Birth names restored
Lineage given a tree with branches
And leaves that now grow
Blood stained roots nurtured
By many waters
What doesnt kill us waits for another chance
And resiliance is a garment we dont take off

Stay Tuned… No Line Left Behind…Just Breathe

Friday Fun Day… Love

So it’s Friday and instead of poetry, we have music for your listening pleasure. The hubby and I were head bobbing while rolling around yesterday and this song came on and it was love. Hip hop is not the same. The message has changed and it has lost its substance. I used to love her. Now, she is just a memory from a not so distant past.

I start to think, and then I sink
Into the paper, like I was ink
When I’m writing, I’m trapped in between the lines
I escape, when I finish the rhyme
I start to think, and then I sink
Into the paper, like I was ink
When I’m writing, I’m trapped in between the lines
I escape, when I finish

I got love, l-o-v-e and I be
Love, l-o-v-e to emcee

Get love, l-o-v-e and I be
Love, l-o-v-e, I emcee
Get love, l-o-v-e and I be
Love, l-o-v-e to emcee
Get love, l-o-v-e and I be
(love, love)
The M-O-S D-E-Finitely

I love the first verse of this song… It’s love, yall!

Enjoy your day! Remember to Leave No Line Left Behind… and don’t forget to Breathe!
